the easy setting - choices
the comment thread on this post was, naturally, stopped after it reached over 800… but i have something to say, and will use my tumblr to say it, i guess.

so, scalzi is saying that the lowest difficulty setting in life is straight white male - something which i think everyone can agree that ON AVERAGE is true. that is to say, that yes, there are dudes out there who are white and straight and have life MUCH worse than me (and i’m touted as being on one of the… highest difficulty settings… though my family is middle class and i’m educated, so it could be a lot worse)
now, everyone gets in a huge tizzy when they read shit like this bc they’re like wtf, so what if i’m this or that - i was BORN THIS WAY - and it’s true. as much as someone can be born gay, others are born straight - neither is anyone’s “fault”, right?
right.
so what then? why talk about this shit anyway?
the point is this - when i talk to people about the problems in the world and they say the most hateful, ignorant comments… maybe if they reflected a bit and realized the world was largely handed to them, they would get that these “others” they hate on so much, are just doing the best they can with what they have. in simple terms: people talk about “the easy setting” so that maybe we can all make the CHOICE TO BE NICE to each other.
so, if you’re straight, or gay or white or have any other degree of pigmentation, or rich or poor or middle class or bi or whatever the hell you are - maybe we can all sit back and realize how awesome our lives are and that our lives being awesome does not entitle us to be assholes to other people. we should just be good and kind and sincere with everyone, and maybe even try to help people out - because the world sucks in some ways for all of us, and if we all play it as if everyone is out to get us, we’ll just make it more sucky for everyone involved.
